The BIB is a balloon that is placed in the stomach. It occupies space in the stomach to give patients a feeling of fullness and to help control their hunger. The BIB is placed endoscopically, using a scope through the mouth. Therefore no surgery or incisions are required to place the device making the procedure safer than traditional weight loss surgery. The device is placed using a light anesthetic called conscious sedation, and patients generally have no awareness of the procedure.
The hunger control that the BIB device provides allows patients to more easily follow a proscribed diet and exercise plan.
The device is removed, again endoscopically, after six months. |
